human trafficking and sexual slavery makes me want to cry. And I don’t know what we can actually do about it. Even in places like the Netherlands and Spain where prostitution is legal, they have tremendous problems with trafficking. So what do we do? Add stricter government regulations? Or keep penalizing ALL persons involved in prostitution, even those who are sex workers of their own free will? Do we punish Johns instead of treating prostitutes, especially those who are minors and/or trafficked, as criminals? What about the corrupt law enforcement and government types who probably secretly patronize the forced-sex trade? I think it’s okay to have sex for money, or to pay someone for sex, if both parties are willing… but I know that some men would literally not think twice about whether the person (maybe even child) they’re paying to fuck is a slave. WHAT DO WE DO? I think we should obviously keep working for the rights of all sex workers instead of ignoring them, which just pushes victims of forced prostitution even more towards the fringes of society. If legalization ultimately doesn’t help though, what do we do?
I just want to go back to last night, being WHITE GIRL WASTED, meeting rappers at the Riot Room, and turning young nihilists into potential activists: “Put down Nietzsche and pick up Marx. Then put down Marx and go volunteer at Planned Parenthood.” Alcohol gives me such a confident boost, then getting on the goddamn internet makes my heart sink. Blergh.
